DIY Publishing
If you are thinking of self-publishing, there are a lot of services you can use--but they can pricey. I put together a guide doing the work of e-book and print-book production yourself, based on my experiences in 2011 (which are outlined in further detail on my blog). The only specialized software I wound up buying was Adobe Acrobat--I laid out my 370-page novel in Word, if you can believe it. Even if you read this, decide it is too much for you to do, and hire someone, at least you will know what it is you're paying for!
Keep in mind when reading this that two years is forever in e-book time, so some things have definitely changed (although other things, like the basics of layouts and cover design, stay the same). The software you use may be different from what I used as well.
